Measure the floor you actually have
Clear the spot where the playpen will live and measure the open floor: from the sofa to the TV stand, from the wall to the rug edge. Measure twice, in both directions, and write down the smaller number of each pair.
Then take away about 12 inches on every side that you need to walk past or reach into. A drawer that opens, a window you open for air, the path to the kitchen. What is left is the largest playpen that fits.
Think about who will be inside
Across the Sweeby range, one crawler is happy in 47 by 47 or 59 by 59 inches. A toddler who walks laps, a visiting cousin or you sitting inside for storytime needs 71 by 59 or 79 by 71. Twins almost always end up in 79 by 71.
The rules that cover freestanding play enclosures in the U.S. are written for children from 6 to 24 months. When your child can climb the wall, the playpen has done its job.
Check the doorway and the storage spot
Every Sweeby playpen folds, but a playpen set up at 79 by 71 inches does not go through an interior door. Set it up in the room where it will stay. When you fold it, it shrinks to the width of one panel, so check that a closet or the space behind the sofa can take it.
Where the playpen goes
Stand it on a flat floor or a firm rug, away from cords, curtains and anything a child can pull in through the mesh. Keep it clear of stairs, heaters and furniture a toddler could climb onto from inside.
It is a play space, not a bed. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises putting a sleeping baby in a crib, bassinet, portable crib or play yard that meets federal sleep standards, with nothing else in it.
